Coronavirus: role of technology for its detection

Corona Virus and role of facial and thermal recognition at Airports, events, gatherings and public places

Corona virus detection

Coronaviruses (COV) are a large family of viruses that causes illness ranging from the
common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a new disease that has been discovered recently in 2019 and has not been previously identified in humans. Till now, no treatment is found to fight against this disease.
According to World Health Organization (WHO), Common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, an infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death.

Facial recognition system:

face detection image

A facial recognition system is a technology capable of identifying or verifying a person from a digital image or a video frame from a video source.
Zhengzhou is the first city in China to set up facial recognition gates at all of its underground stations. Facial recognition cameras are now being used alongside infrared temperature scanners to help contain the spread of the Coronavirus. The high-tech cameras allow authorities to track and access a citizen’s travel history. There are now an estimated 350 million surveillance cameras in China.

Thermal recognition:

thermal face detection

This system has the ability to perform facial recognition using images from thermal cameras which enhanced the surveillance, such as by automatically detecting when a person of interest is nearby and sending an alert to operators.

What are Infrared Sensors?

How these scanners work?
All live objects emit infrared energy or heat. Unlike the regular cameras that record light reflected by the objects, thermal cameras use heat sensors that can record heat generated by the body of a person to create a 2D image with different temperature levels. These cameras can be calibrated to detect abnormal body temperatures such as over 101 degrees. This isn’t the first time thermal scanning is being used to screen higher body temperature related to infections that can cause an epidemic.
Thermal scanners can scan large crowds and spot people with higher temperatures than the rest. Once authorities identify possible vectors, they can segregate them for further screening. So, this is the reason that they are being used in airports, events, gatherings, and public places.

How effective are thermal scanners?
Thermal cameras are effective only up to the point of telling who has a higher temperature than the rest. It may not mean the person is infected with Coronavirus. Additional screening systems are required for that. Studying thermal images is not everyone’s cup of tea. It requires training and understanding of thermal colors and their patterns. As far as their effect on the human body is concerned, these cameras as safe and discreet. There is no proven risk of any form of radiation.
